The Magicshine MJ-808 is the light that changed the way UK cyclists bought their lights. The very first high power, low cost lamp and it was brought to you first by Magicshine UK. It remains one of our most popular lights as it offers car headlight bright lights at an affordable price. At the moment we're also including a free extension lead and helmet mount. This is a very light and compact light system, fully interchangeable with other Magicshine components, with flexibility of power output for extended run times.

 

Mounting

 

The MJ-808 uses the tried and tested 'O' ring system to mount the light head to almost any size bars. This is so quick and easy to do (say 30 seconds), it makes swapping the lights between bikes very simple. Simply hook the 'O' ring over one lug, place the headlight in position on the bars and bring the ring under the bar and hook over the lug on the other side of the light head. The choice of O ring size means you can be sure your light will stay in place, even in the roughest of conditions.

 

The re-chargeable lithium-ion battery is held securely in a weatherpoof bag which has 2 chunky velcro straps making it easy to secure to the crossbar. There is a connecting lead from the battery to the lighthead.

 

Battery

 

The battery is the Magicshine standard BAK battery with a claimed run time of over 3 hours. Reducing the power output of the light will, of course, extend the run time significantly. Lightsets all include a UK charger or, for our European customers, Euro chargers as standard.

 

In Use

 

The MJ-808 is a very versatile light which offers information on battery levels as well as various ouput levels. The clicky swith at the rear is illumintaed by a colour coded LED. This indicates current battery status through green (fully charged) amber and then red (indicating that it's seriously time to reduce power and return home!).

 

The switch itself just needs to be clicked cycle through 3 dirrent levels of power output, the strobe setting nd then the SOS mode. By depressing the switch for around a full second at any time, the light will switch off. It really couldn't be easier to use.

I bought this in conjunction with the 838 helmet light and I now ride in a bubble of light amongst all this darkness. I didn't go for the E as I couldn't see the point of the the additional cost for only 100 lumens and I'm not missing them. The mount is secure but then my ride isn't very bumpy. The battery and light are very easy to mount but I'm going to make a bespoke mount for better security and less clutter. Having used an Exposure Race Maxx2 (480 lumens) for a couple of years, I was amazed to see a 900 lumen set for the price of this Magicshine. It is brilliant for the money. On my weekly Wednesday night training ride it lights up the road really well. You get a good spread of light and can make out road hazards before you ride into them. Heartily recommended. Excellent, high quality beam that really lights up the darkest of roads & cycle paths. This is my first externally battery light - new job means a new cycle route along a very dark cycle track! Doesn't quite get the full 5 stars due following (minor) negatives: 1. The 'rubber band' method of attaching the light head to the handle bars feels like a cheap move on behalf of the manufacturer. Even with the smaller, and therefore tighter of the 2 fixing bands supplied, the head unit can move slightly when you're on rough ground. Time will tell just how long they last with the constant stretching of fixing & removal... 2. The on/mode select/off switch is very fiddly to operate with thick wind-proof cycling gloves. Being illuminated with various colours to show battery level is a great saving touch though! 3. Power connector between light head and battery needs a BIG force to pull them apart. Can't help thinking I'm slowly pulling the wires off the connectors inside! Finally, there's cheaper places on the web to get this but you'll wait a lot longer for it to arrive and it'll probably come with a EURO style mains fitting. Hope my review helps, folks! I bought this as an add-on to the MJ816.. the 816 goes on the bars, the 808 goes on my helmet... along with the battery pack :-)



From my experience with other lights I figured it would be useful to have a light that illuminates where I'm looking, as well as one that shows me where the bike is going...



The mounts for the lights and the battery pack fit neatly through the air vents... and the light's control button is easily reached.



The modes are interesting: -

3 full beam power settings,

a rapid strobe and what appears to be

a varying speed flash - quick, slow, very slow, quick again...



That last is sure to catch the attention of anyone who sees it but the pause on the very slow phase is quite long, long enough to think it's gone out... but as one would not be using it to light the way in that mode I don't think that this would be an issue :-)

Awesome - it's extremely simpleto attach to the bike, charge and use whilst cycling. When you are on the road you have to put it on a lower setting because it is so bright it glares the other drivers. On the trail you get superb distance with this light and easily enough collateral light to feel more than comfortable to travel as fast as you wish. Riding off road in the Chilterns with the Magicshine is FANTASTIC! Light - easily fixed to the bars or helmet. Long Lasting- always still on 2-3 houirs later. Robust - well made and tough. Bright - similar to having a car headlamp beam coming out from your bike, allowing you to ride flatout in confidence. White beam - is the whitest of all the club lights giving crystal clear vision way up the track. Cheap - It's amazing value for money. I have yet to find anything better than a Magicshine. On my first night rise (a loop of follow the dog, Cannock Chase), this light provided a great pool of light in front of the bike and punched a long way ahead. I used this light in conjunction with a head torch set to narrow the beam to provide light in the direction I was looking but for most of the ride, this was not needed.
